At the top of your masonry chimney is a sloped bed of mortar called the chimney crown; its job is to shed water away from the chimney.
Over time the mortar deteriorates and the mortar crown will begin to crack, exacerbated by freeze/thaw cycles.
The mortar crown begins to come apart, then allowing severe damage as rain water will then be absorbed into your chimney. You'll next start to see water dripping into your fireplace or running down the face wall above your fireplace opening.
Next the mortar holding the bricks together will fall out and the bricks become loose. Falling bricks can cause big damage to your roof or to your vehicles and the people passing by below.
Replacing the mortar crown involves scraping off the old crown, then laying a new one. We will re-set any loose bricks and tuckpoint the mortar joints.
We also offer installation of metal chase pans, such as the one pictured below in copper.
